CONSTITUTION

                                                       PREAMBLE

We declare and establish this constitution to preserve and secure the principles of our faith and to govern this body in an orderly manner.  This constitution will preserve the liberties of each individual church member and the freedom of action of this body in relation to other churches.
                                                          ARTICLE I.   NAME
This body will be known as Edgewood Baptist Church, of Hopkinsville, Christian County, Kentucky.
                                                       ARTICLE II.   PURPOSE
The purpose of this body will be to carry out the Great Commission of our Lord, Jesus Christ as found in Matthew 28:18-20.
                                              ARTICLE III.   ARTICLES OF FAITH
This church affirms the Baptist Faith and Message as adopted by the Southern Baptist Convention.
However, that statement of faith does not exhaust the extent of our beliefs. The Bible itself, as the inspired and infallible Word of God that speaks with final authority concerning truth, morality, and the proper conduct of mankind, is the sole and final source of all that we believe. For purposes of Edgewood Baptist Church’s faith, doctrine, practice, and policy, our pastors and deacon body will represent the final interpretive authority on the Bible’s meaning and application.
We believe that all human life is sacred and created by God in his image. Human life is of inestimable worth in all its dimensions, including pre-born babies, the aged, the physically or mentally challenged, and every other stage or condition from conception through natural death. We are therefore called to defend, protect, and value all human life. (Psalm 139)
Because God has ordained marriage and defined it as the covenant relationship between a man and a woman, Edgewood Baptist Church will only recognize marriages between a biological man and a biological woman. Further, the pastors and staff of Edgewood shall only participate in weddings and solemnize marriages between one biological man and one biological woman. Finally, the facilities and property of Edgewood Baptist Church shall only host weddings and activities pertaining to such weddings between one biological man and one biological woman.
                                        ARTICLE IV.   CHURCH COVENANT
Each member affirms the covenant below:
God established a covenant relationship, first with His people—Israel, and then a new covenant with His people—the church.  Therefore, as members of God’s covenant family known as Edgewood Baptist Church, we commit ourselves to God and to one another to be Christlike in our lives and relationships through the presence, guidance, and power of God’s Holy Spirit.
We will love one another as Christ loved us, honor one another above ourselves, be kind and compassionate to one another, encourage and build up one another, comfort one another, and offer hospitality to one another. We will have a spirit of unity based on our common bond in Christ, be united in mind and convictions, meet together regularly, have equal concern for each other, suffer when one suffers and rejoice when another is honored, and consider others more important than ourselves.  We will use our God-given knowledge to instruct one another, use our spiritual gifts to bless one another, use the Word of Christ to teach and admonish one another, and nurture one another toward spiritual maturity measured by the life and ministry of Jesus.  We will confess our sins to one another, pray for each other, warn those who are idle, encourage the discouraged, help the weak, be patient with one another, forgive one another as the Lord forgave us, and gently restore those who sin.  We will not talk negatively about one another, not pass judgment on one another, not put any stumbling block in one another’s way, not be morally impure, not use obscenities, not be greedy, but we will be filled with the Spirit.  We will let the light of our godly lives shine together to bring glory to God.26

Section 1.  General:  The membership of this church shall be comprised of individuals who are believers in the Lord Jesus Christ and affirm the tenets of the Church Constitution, and who offer evidence, by their confession and their conduct, that they are living in accord with their affirmations and this Constitution and By-Laws and are actively pursuing and continuing in a vital fellowship with the Lord Jesus Christ. The membership of this church, under the leadership of the pastors, shall have final authority in all matters of church governance, as set forth and described in these governing documents. This is a sovereign and democratic Baptist Church under the Lordship of Jesus Christ. The membership reserves the right to determine who will be members of this church and the conditions of such membership. The church will maintain a list of all church members.
Section 2.  Candidacy:  Any person may offer themself as a candidate for membership in this church. Candidates may be presented in any of the following ways:

B.     By request for a letter of recommendation from another church of like faith and practice.
C.     By statement of conversion and believer’s baptism by immersion when no letter is available.
Candidates for membership will counsel with a pastor who will help them determine the appropriate next steps for any of the above categories. After attending a member orientation, candidates will be presented for church vote at any business meeting. Candidates will become members upon the affirmation of the church.
Section 3.  Member Orientation:  The church will regularly offer a member orientation. Church members will have participated in the church’s member orientation at least once.

●    Serve as a pastor, deacon, ministry staff, committee member, or trustee of the church.
●    Serve in a regular teaching role in the church.

The pastors, other members of the church staff and deacons are available for counsel and guidance. Redemption rather than punishment should be the goal which governs the attitude of one member to another.
Should some serious sin exist which would cause a member to become a liability to the general welfare and witness of the church, every reasonable measure will be taken by the church to restore them through biblical repentance. All such proceedings will be pervaded by a spirit of Christian kindness and forbearance and in accordance with biblical passages like Matthew 18:15-20, 1 Corinthians 5:1-13, and 2 Corinthians 2:5-8. If there is no repentance, the church may proceed to declare the offender to be no longer in the membership of the church.
Any person whose membership has been terminated for any condition which has made it necessary for the church to exclude them may upon their request be restored to the membership by a vote of the church upon evidence of their repentance and reformation.
